It's been well documented that Rotarians are great volunteers. I guess we
can add that they're great cooks too!
How else can you explain going through 780 hot dogs at last week's Canada
Day party at Centennial Park.
Granted, with Mother Nature's help, with what could be described as the best
weather for July 1 in a long time, the day saw near record crowds attend the
festivities.
As chairman of the Canada Day committee, and a Rotarian, I was proud to see
the turn out of local residents and visitors, as well as the great turn out
of Walkerton Rotarians who volunteer each year.
That said, being the chair of this event is like the relationship of the
Governor General and the Queen. We don¹t really do much, we're just
figureheads. Well, I was in charge of the weather, so I guess I did my part.
But the real work is done by the Rotarians who show up every year and
especially others on the committee including Coun. Tim Mancell, Don Moore,
Gerry O'Gorman, Clayton Gutscher, (all outstanding Rotarians) and Dan
Wilken, Brockton's Director of Recreation and Facilities. Recreation worker
Ken Schlorff is also a big help getting everything set up in the morning
while Recreation and Wellness Programmer Lynne Davidson and staff organized
the kids parade and games and the free swim.
With the inclusion of the Legion's pipe band, and performance by Double
Take, you can see the celebration is the result of great teamwork.
A young lady from The Bull radio station, who dropped in to help promote the
day in Brockton, said our little party is the biggest community celebration
in the area.
It's a great day to be proud of our nation, proud of our community and proud
of the many volunteers who make such a day possible.
