Walkerton District Secondary School alumni have one more chance to come home to say goodbye before the school is closed this year.
There will be an open house this Saturday from 2-5 p.m. for alumni and the community to get one last look.
“Come on in, walk the halls. It’s a chance to say goodbye to the school,” committee co-chair Laurie Moore said.
The school’s historical committee has created memorabilia and organized a few events for alumni and present Raiders alike to celebrate their school.
“It’s for the community to come and celebrate the building and its history,” Moore said.
She, along with co-chair Ang McDougald and the committee have partnered with the semi-annual alumni basketball game on Jan. 21, which will see alumni play in three games – alumni vs. alumni; alumni vs. senior girls; and alumni vs. senior boys, starting at 3 p.m. Admission is $2.
There will also be an arts showcase tomorrow (Jan. 19) and Friday, Jan. 20. There will be an art exhibit, drama and dance presentations, and musical interludes. Both nights have a 7 p.m. start time, with a $5 admission.
All proceeds from the events will go towards the new school.
As will all the funds raised from calendars the committee is selling, which feature full colour and historic photos of the school. The calendars are available at BMO, Holst Office Supplies, Pellow Pharmasave, Joy Source For Sports, and Home Hardware. They cost $15.
The committee is also selling plaques for $20, which are mounted on bricks salvaged from the east wing, which was torn down last year. They can be ordered by calling the school and will be available for pick-up in June.
