The Hawks split two games on Wednesday and Saturday against the Mount Forest Patriots and Wingham Ironmen, beating the Patriots Wednesday 5-2, before dropping the game against the Ironmen 7-2 on Saturday.
The Patriots opened the scoring Wednesday, just 26 seconds in, when they beat back-up goaltender Keegan Woodman. This would prove to be the only scoring action of the first period.
The second period was dominated by the Hawks, as defencemen David Jones opened the scoring for the Hawks three minutes in on a passes from Cody Oehm and Jay Thomson. Another minute later the Hawks tallied their next marker to take the lead, this one coming off the stick of Andy Mitchell on a nice pass from winger Eric Lekun.
Five minutes into the third period, the Patriots came back once again to tie the game at twos. Drew Davidson got back on the scoreboard after a long departure due to injury problems taking the lead 3-2, getting assists were Lekun and Andrew Graham. The Hawks added the next two goals by Andy Mitchell and Shane Macdonald as insurance markers to top the Patriots by a final score of 5-2.
Woodman recorded the win with 22 saves, while Mount Forest goaltender Brian Hainsworth took the loss with 34 saves.
Saturday, the Hawks took on their rival Wingham Ironmen, and forward Andy Mitchell scored his third goal in two games shorthanded 11 minutes into the first to get the first marker. However Wingham’s Travis Donaldson scored back-to-back goals to take the lead at the end of the first period.
The second period was much of the same as Donaldson completed the hat trick, as the Ironmen also added another goal on the powerplay taking a commanding 4-1 lead.
Wingham added another three goals in the third period.
Drew Davidson scored on a pass from Lekun, making the final 7-2.
Jeff Puddephatt earned the win with 26 saves, while Woodman made 24 saves in the loss.
Walkerton will play the Mitchell Hawks in Mitchell on Friday at 8:30 p.m., before returning home Saturday to play against the Hanover Barons at 6:30 pm.
