The Walkerton Hawks had a disappointing weekend, dropping two games, and seeing one of their top scorers out for the rest of the season.
Drew Davidson, who is third in the league for points (67 in 28 games played), suffered a broken ankle in Saturday’s game against the Hanover Barons.
Walkerton dropped both games on the weekend, by scores of 4-1 against the Mitchell Hawks, and 7-5 against the Hanover Barons.
Mitchell scored the first two goals of Friday’s game in the first period, before Eric Lekun found the back of the net with a man advantage on a pass from Andy Mitchell and Haden Campbell. The second period was left with no scoring.
The Hawks never found the the net again in this game, while Mitchell added two more insurance markers in the third, concluding the game with a final score of 4-1.
This game was dominated by Mitchell as they spent much of the game on the powerplay with Walkerton taking 46 minutes in penalties, resulting in 14 Mitchell powerplays, not including the three game misconducts for abuse of the officials that were dealt to Shane Macdonald, Mike Bujold and goaltender Jeff Flagler.
The game against Hanover started out with Walkerton taking a 3-1 lead through one period of action as Matt Hill found the back of the net twice, along with Jay Thomson. But, the Barons responded in the second, scoring four goals in the period – three were netted by Robbie Moe – to make a hat trick. This made it 5-3 heading into the third period.
Walkerton skaters found their second wind and replied with a two-goal effort to tie the game up with goals coming from Adam Alexander and Lekun, however the Barons’ offence was too good as they potted two more goals in the third to take the final to 7-5.
The Hawks are one-for-three in the new year. They have a chance to end the streak this weekend playing the Goderich Sailors in a home and home match up on Friday at 8:30 p.m. in Walkerton and Saturday at 8 p.m. in Goderich.
