A Grade 12 WDSS student had a firm hold on the gold medal in wrestling at a recent CWOSSA wrestling tournament in Kitchener.
Zach Grandy went undefeated, bringing home a gold medal and qualifying for the OFSAA tournament March 3-5 in Tillsonburg.
Grandy was the lone competitor from WDSS at the tournament. He was one of approximately 14 wrestlers in the heavyweight class.
Grandy went 3-0 on his way to the gold medal.
“My semi-final match was my toughest,” he said, recalling his bout with a wrestler from Monsignor Doyle in Cambridge, “He was really strong and fast. He was a tough competitor.”
The six-foot, 290 pound 17-year-old, who was athlete of the month at his school in?January, is 15-0 this season.
Grandy began wrestling in Grade 9.
“Pretty much right as I started I found myself really enjoying it. It was a lot of fun,” he said, “I was winning back then too, so I wanted to stay with it and see how well I could do.”
This will be Grandy’s third trip to provincials. In the past two years he’s placed in the top 10 at the tournament.
His high school success has got Grandy thinking about taking his wrestling into the post-secondary realm in the future.
“Some people have expressed interest about my wrestling,” he said.
