During ‘Turn off the Screens’ week (April 26 to May 2), Brockton’s Parks and Recreation Department is planning a number of events to encourage residents to give the TV and computer a break and get active.
Among the events they have planned are a number of free skates at the arena, a trail clean up, and a bike rodeo.
“We have got three free skates planned,” Brockton Recreation Programmer Lynne Davidson said, adding that information about ‘Turn Off the Screens’ week will be released on flyers for all the local schools.
The first free skate takes place at the Walkerton arena on Monday, April 26 between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.
On Wednesday, Apil 28 youth sports, including floor hockey, will be taking place at SHHS from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and another free skate will take place at the arena from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Starting at 6 p.m. on April 29, Davidson said there will be a community trail clean up taking place, starting at the end of South Street by the trail Saugeen River Trail.
A third free skate goes on April 30 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and a bike rodeo in association with the OPP will take place on May 1 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the parking lot of the Walkerton Community?Centre.
Parks and Recreation are working with Public Health?Grey Bruce to put on and promote the week, Davidson said.
“There are many opportunities,” Davidson said, “Public health is in charge of getting a flyer up and ready that will cover all the Grey/Bruce opportunities available for the week including things like musuem exhibits and swims going on in the different municipalities.”
As a warmup to the week, Davidson encourages residents to contact Parks and Recreation about registering for an evening of rock climbing at WDSS put on by the Guelph Grotto Indoor Climbing Gym.
“We’re looking for more participants for our rock climbing evening on April 21,” she said, “The Guelph Grotto offers the program. They’re hired through the high school for that whole week and if we get enough people registered we’ll have access to the wall from 7 to 9 p.m. on the 21st.”
