The Chepstow Lang Farms Lightning went undefeated to take the Ontario peewee boys’ championship in Port Perry Ontario recently.
Seeded first in the tournament, the boys got off to a flying start Friday night with a 17-0 romp over eighth-seeded Elmira. Saturday, the going got tough, as the Lightning took a 3-2 squeaker from the Napanee Express to start the day. The matinee game featured second-seed Port Perry Lumberjacks, also unbeaten to date.
After winning the toss, Chepstow led 5-2 going to the seventh inning, but Port Perry scored three to push the game to extra innings, with the tie-breaking runner starting on second. Port Perry scored one, with nobody out in the top of the eighth, and proceeded to load the bases before 1st baseman Scott Robbins climbed the fence for a foul ball fly to end the inning.
The teams again traded runs, going to the bottom of the ninth, with Port Perry up 7-6, before Lightning centre fielder Braden Boley knocked a lead-off, walk-off homer to end the game and send Chepstow through to the final (the inning began with a runner at second as per extra inning rules).
Sunday morning, Chepstow again faced Napanee for the title, and again jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but Napanee battled back to take a 6-5 lead after five- and-a-half innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Boley blasted another two-run shot, to put Chepstow in the lead going to the seventh.
With Napanee’s lead-off batter on first, third baseman Tyler Fritz caught a pop-up bunt and threw to first for a clutch double play, before pitcher Matt Wardrop fanned the final batter to end the game. Wardrop tossed a total of 27 innings for Chepstow, striking out 26 batters and walking five.
Right fielder Max Barclay hit 6 for 14 (.429) and shortstop Trent Bell went 7 for 13 (.538) on the weekend. Second baseman Mitch Eckert led all fielders with 14 assists.
The Lightning travels to Quebec for the Eastern Canadian Championships, starting Aug. 23.
