SBGHC trying to get chemo centre
Pat Halpin South Bruce Grey Health Centre is looking at the possibility of offering chemotherapy treatment at one of its sites.

The Grey Bruce Health Network supports that plan, CEO Paul Davies told Bruce County council last week, but the first step is to meet a long list of requirements for specialized staff and equipment.

"We need a whole laundry list of things that are required before you can offer that program. We're currently going through that list to try to determine our compliance," he told Bruce county council during an update on the hospital's projects.

SBGHC is networking with regional oncologists needed to support a chemotherapy program, and applying for approvals from Cancer Care Ontario before it can offer chemotherapy, Davies said.

Bringing chemotherapy to one the hospital's sites in Kincardine, Walkerton, Durham or Chesley would be "a huge step" in improving access for patients, Davies said.

Right now chemotherapy treatment is only available in Owen Sound or outside the region.
